Flesh and Blood: Italian Masterpieces from the Capodimonte Museum
DATE: March 1, 2020 – June 14, 2020
LOCATION: Kimbell Art Museum
3333 Camp Bowie Blvd
Fort Worth, TX 76107
The special exhibition Flesh and Blood will feature nearly forty masterpieces from the Capodimonte Museum in Naples, one of the most important fine arts collections in Italy. This incredible gathering of pictures will be a journey through the major artistic achievements of Italian Renaissance and Baroque painting, featuring captivating stories, from Christian martyrdom to mythological passion, and diverse formats and purposes, from the intimacy of private devotion to the grandeur of state portraiture. Captured masterfully by the greatest talents of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including Titian, Raphael, El Greco, Annibale Carracci, Artemisia Gentileschi, Jusepe Ribera, and Luca Giordano, these extraordinarily beautiful scenes can be moving or imposing, violent, extravagant, or even seductive. The show will draw from the best of both the Renaissance and Baroque holdings of the museum, starting with the famous portrait of the elegant beauty Antea by Parmigianino and the ravishing Danaë painted by Titian for the pope’s grandson, Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. Annibale Carracci’s Pietà and Guido Reni’s Atalanta and Hippomenes will face off against Ribera’s Drunken Silenus and Giovanni Battista Caracciolo’s Virgin of the Purgatory in a contest of Northern Italian classicism versus Neapolitan Caravaggism.
Ruckus Rodeo at the Modern
DATE: January 17, 2020 – March 29, 2020
LOCATION: The Modern
3200 Darnell Street
Fort Worth, TX 76107
Ruckus Rodeo, 1975–76, by the New York-based artist Red Grooms, will be presented at the Modern to coincide with the 2020 Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show. Grooms’s immense, walk-through work of art covers 1,237 square feet of gallery space. This “sculpto-pictorama,” as Grooms has referred to it, consists of painted two-dimensional surfaces and sculptural three-dimensional figures that celebrate the Fort Worth rodeo. Sculpture wire, canvas, burlap, acrylic paint, and a fiberglass compound known as celastic were used to construct the work’s Texas-sized, larger-than-life caricatures of rodeo archetypes—including the rodeo queen and her steed, a bucking bronc, playful rodeo clowns, and a giant yellow bull named Butter. Ruckus Rodeo portrays the chaos, entertainment, and danger of the rodeo. Grooms’s engaging work is characterized by a grand sense of spectacle, encompassing ritual, pageantry, and disorderly commotion.
